The 9:30 Club is one of the best concert venues I have even been to. It is small enough to feel close and intimate, yet still large enough to not feel cramped and crowded. I was talking with one of the bouncers once and he explained to me how they can move the stage in and out to make the standing room the perfect size for any show. If it is a big/well-known show they push the stage back and make the standing room larger, if it is a smaller crowd, they move the stage to make it feel more intimate. I think that is a pretty cool concept. They also book a huge variety of shows and so on one night you may have a punk band and they next a gospel choir. The diversity of the shows is fantastic!
In September, we saw Matt Nathanson.
In October, we saw Ben Harper.
And last weekend, we saw Eric Hutchinson.
All AMAZING shows! Matt was FUN, Ben was PHENOMENAL and Eric was AWESOME. It is always fun to feel like you can have a connection with the performers. Eric Hutchinson is from DC which made the show even better. He did song about how hard it is to do a hometown show because everyone wants him to get them tickets. His song was called "Sorry Mr. Obama, I don't have anymore tickets for you today." Very Funny! His conversations with the crowd between songs are hilarious.
We have 9:30 Club down to a science now. We metro in and hang out at a few bars on U Street, then we finish up at Duffy's (the bar across the street from The 9:30 Club.) When we get in, we wiggle our way into the crowd and up to the front left corner. It makes for great views of the stage with easy access to the bar and the bathrooms. (Important things for us)
Last week as we left Duffy's and headed for the show, we passed a guy on the street with a bigger fro than both my roommate and I combined and we commented on it. Amanda told him she wanted her hair to look like his and he responded with some positive encouragement and helpful tips on how to get your fro to grow. It was a random, funny interaction.
When the band came on stage... we both froze and screamed!! That's the fro guy!!!
He's the bass player=Awesome!
Next week we will visit a new venue... Merriweather Post Pavilion in Maryland.
Black Keys here we come!
