ABQ Spring Break

This past week was Spring Break... a much needed break at that. I flew over to New Mexico to hang with the family. When I first arrived, we took a mini road trip to Carlsbad Caverns. The Caverns were awesome!
750 storeys below the surface you enter rooms as big as 14 football fields. It was kinda breath taking. Pictures didn't really turn out well but it was cool!

Batman loved being in the "Bat Cave." Luckily for me, the bats were not at home! They migrate to Mexico in the winter and just now are starting to come back to Carlsbad. They said there are about 30 of them in there right now... at peak times there are upwards of 600 bats in the caves. Frightening!!

We did a guided tour and then one on our own.
The kids did the Jr. Ranger program and got sworn in as Junior Rangers!

We stayed at the Carlsbad KOA. It was actually really good. They have an awesome set up there...11 cabins, sections for tents and a lot of RV parking. They have a pool, volleyball courts, golf carts and a really good BBQ restaurant. They really went above and beyond to make your stay there a pleasant one. They have a scavenger hunt we completed and got Popsicles. They deliver your meals directly to your cabin. I highly recommend it.

On the way back to ABQ, we stopped at the Smokey the Bear museum.
We played on the playground and learned some interesting facts about Smokey.

  • Smokey was a real bear.
  • Smokey is the second most recognizable figure in the world... behind only, Santa Claus.
  • Smokey has his own zip code, the only other person to have their own zip code....The President.
  • Smokey lived at the National Zoo in DC for most of his life...when he died, his body was flown back to NM and buried at 3:00 AM... because there were threats made about kidnapping his body!

After visiting Smokey, we went to Gran Quivira National Monument. It is part of the Salinas Pueblo Missions. The ruins were very interesting to see how people once lived and to see what is left now.

On Tuesday, Mattie had art class so Tas and I went to Explora. He enjoyed spending time with the bubbles, marbles and water sections. After the museums, we went to the performing arts center at UNM for a children's theater play of The Gruffalo. Its a very cute show about a  mouse who goes for a walk in the woods.... you should check it out. Then later that day, we went to gymnastics class. Mattie is really good!! Tas usually goes on Fridays but due to Easter, he did a make-up class while I was there. It was fun to watch them both.

Wednesday was T-ball day! Their first game is in a few weeks but practice was pretty damn cute.

It was a really fun week in New Mexico. My visits are always busy and always too short.
